Make the most of your volunteer experience by preparing well in advance of your service program. While we encourage everyone to plan early, we know that student schedules can be unpredictable. We'll work to find the best opportunity for you to make a difference.
It's common for volunteers to join a team as early as a year before departure, with most team members planning seriously at least six months in advance. We recommend you allow time to research the service program and make a well-informed decision about which program best fits your interests and goals. Allow our volunteer coordinators to answer your questions and walk you through the service options within each host community. If you plan on fundraising, it's best to start at least nine months in advance, if possible.
Many Global Volunteers service programs fill very early, especially during spring break and summer months. The sooner you can start exploring your options, the more opportunities will be open to you. Follow these easy steps to join a service team:
1. Speak with a Volunteer Coordinator at 800-487-1074 to learn more about your opportunities.
2. Choose a service program/date based upon your specific skills, interests or course of study.
3. Complete your application either online, by phone or fax it to your volunteer coordinator. Don't forget your student discount!
4. Arrange airfare once you submit your volunteer preparation materials and are accepted on the team.
5. Apply for your visa (if required) and schedule any immunizations (if required)
6. Consider starting a fundraising campaign. Refer to our fundraising tools here.
7. Volunteer! Remember, as a Global Volunteer, you're fully engaged at least eight hours each day in direct service to the host community. There's no better way to truly make a difference while you learn about another culture.
We have a place for you! Be assurred that even if you're late in planning, our host communities around the world need you, so check with a volunteer coordinator to learn what last-minute opportunities are out there.
