International Volunteer Day
December 5, 2007
|
Global Volunteers has promoted volunteerism within the USA and abroad since 1984. This year, while our international staff are gathered in St. Paul, Minnesota for two weeks of training in early December, our host partners worldwide continue work on the following important human and economic development projects. Our country managers invite volunteers to work hand-in-hand with local people to contribute to this important work in December 2007 and beyond:
We're all doing well and busy harvesting corn we planted last year. Farming for the next season will continue up to January next year.
In December, our main project for volunteers in Pommern will be teaching, construction and preparing holes for tree planting once we get rains.
Volunteers working in Cebadilla early in December will assist with labor projects at the community center, elementary school and health clinic. Later in the month, volunteers will work on community buildings in San Luis. We're constantly maintaining and improving the community buildings in the villages where we work. This is real rural community development in action.
- INDIA (8th year of Service)
Volunteers will paint daycare and medical facilities and give their love and care to the babies at Assisi Illam. Health care professionals can work at the hospital. We're working hard to make all the facilities a comfortable and loving place for kids who don't have parents. We need your help!
December is a special time before Christmas, because we'll celebrate with Santa and the children at the Clinic. Usually, Santa is one of the Global Volunteers. Some of the local children and local volunteers will participate as well, making this a very festive time!
- PERU (3rd year of Service)
We'll be doing a number of Christmas projects with the children at the orphanage. During International Volunteer Day, we'll bathe, dress, feed and play with about 20 kids under age two. Further, several groups of teenagers ages 10-12 are learning English in school, and need some extra help and motivation. Come join us!
