"Partners in Development," a title integrated into Global Volunteers' name and logo in 1984, reflects our
philosophy of service and commitment to upholding local self-reliance. It states who we are and what we do. Global Volunteers is led by experts in international micro-economic and human development who work with local leaders to translate long-term development goals into volunteer strategies.
In special consultative status with the United Nations, Global Volunteers is fully committed to the
U.N. Millennium Development Goals and reports on service program outcomes every four years.
We make a difference so you can make a difference. To be consistently helpful in another culture requires expertise in program management, community development, and volunteer coordination. This means in our international work:
- We protect host community independence
- We guard against exploitation of local people
- We are vigilant in monitoring our cultural impact
- We provide appropriate financial project support
- We employ experts in development and service
- We choose our local hosts and projects carefully
- We've gained the respect of others in the field:
"Global Volunteers always does a good job preparing their people before they go out," says David Minich, director of Habitat for Humanity's Global Village work camp program, "so that they are well-organized and well-focused when they are out in the field. They are definitely an organization that we look up to." (Christian Science Monitor)
Global Volunteers has always sought locally initiated and maintained work projects. Communities embody their cultural, social and economic issues, and know their needs and priorities. They realize the barriers to, as well as the possibilities for, their advancement. This local wisdom guides our work projects. We don't suggest "results" or bring "solutions." Our dedicated host partners, in directing our efforts, ensure optimal development assistance through volunteers' work.
Our mantra is: "Local people are always in charge." We believe that true development mobilizes empowered people: Both those seeking assistance, and those who seek to serve them. Nurturing long-term relationships is central to our worldwide success. We invest financial and human resources to provide continuous local program support and are proud to still be working in the host community we first served in 1984! Join our legacy of true service!
