Greece: Working in Crete and Northern Greece, over 65 volunteer teams have taught English to village youths and university students and brought compassion and care to institutionalized handicapped citizens since the program began in 1995.
Ecuador: Over 1,200 volunteers have served in two host communities in and near Quito since 1996. Together with local people, our teams have constructed a group home and daycare facilities, built adaptive furniture & playgrounds, provided health care assistance, taught English language skills, and befriended local people who maintain projects for economically impoverished, at-risk and disabled children.
China: Since 1996, up to 18 volunteer teams per year have shared goodwill, English lessons and legal and medical expertise in Xi'an, Yunnan, An Shang and now, on Hainan Island. Well over 2,000 volunteers have served more than 35 schools throughout these provinces. "Project Peace," a village development program, is emblematic of the strong commitment between Global Volunteers and the local leadership in our host communities.
Ireland and Northern Ireland: Since 1998, five or six volunteer teams each year have helped advance the agenda of the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation and the Corrymeela Community.
Ghana: Since 1998, over 500 volunteers have helped build school facilities, teach English and assist with health care in a small coastal fishing village and a broader inland agricultural community.
Cook Islands: Since 1998, nearly 800 volunteers have tutored island children in reading skills, provided health care, cleared forest trails and assisted with community building projects.
India: Since 1999, over 700 volunteers have befriended and taught homeless, abandoned and disabled youth and helped upgrade and renovate dilapidated community building in the outskirts of two major urban areas.
Romania: Begun in 1999, this program has attracted over 2,000 volunteers who have fed, loved, diapered and hugged at-risk babies, painted and repaired playrooms, sorted clothing, restored a playground, and taught English language skills to eager elementary and secondary school students. We continue to send up to 18 teams per year to assist in this way.
Hungary: Over 500 volunteers have help elementary students with English language skills and widened their global perspectives through interactive classroom exercises since 2003.
Australia: Some 300 volunteers have helped with reforestation, landscaping, home building and repair, education and elder care projects in Indigenous communities since this program began in 2004.
Peru: Begun in 2004, this urban Lima program has placed more than 700 volunteers on the campus of the largest South American orphanage. Projects include child care, English teaching, painting and repair of campus buildings, and assisting with physical therapy sessions.
Brazil: This program, begun in 2006, unites Global Volunteers with the world's first non-profit umbrella organization, Santa Casa. Still in its early years, this development partnership mobilizes 19 volunteer teams annually to assist with childcare and English instruction for economically impoverished, disabled, and sick children in the coastal city of Salvadore.
Portugal: Begun in 2008, this service program enables volunteers to teach English language skills in elementary and secondary school classrooms.
South Africa: The first teams in 2008 will assist local people with diverse capacity-building projects in the areas of education, economic self-reliance and social development.
Vietnam: Returning to Vietnam in 2008, Global Volunteers is invited to help teach conversational English to high school and university students and younger children at a local orphanage in Hanoi.
