Join Final Hungary Team in March 2012

Global Volunteers has taught English conversational skills to bright public school students in Hodmezovasarhely, (HOD-mezer-vah-shar-hey) Hungary since 2003. The mayor, teachers and school administrators requested volunteer resources on pronunciation, idioms, and syntax. Working in partnership with local people on long-term community development projects is foundational to our relationship with host organizations worldwide. Our investments of volunteer service, financial support and international recognition are hallmarks of our commitment to this partnership.

After less than two decades of independence, Hungary has adopted English as the language of commerce, technology and opportunity. English is now widely spoken on the street and in business, and is mandatory in classrooms. Team members have worked in 14 public schools, ranging from the elementary level up to the high school and vocational level. More than 30 teachers have hosted volunteers because this region of Hungary rarely has received foreign language teachers. Team members have served as resources on topics of North American culture, including discussions on history, daily lifestyle, sports, and school systems. English language songs, games, dialogues, letter writing, plays, flash cards, and discussions have been used in small and large groups. Each has served as a link in a long chain of volunteers who have brought a priceless service to students of all ages.

In March, 2012 we will complete our committment to our Hungarian hosts with our final volunteer team. Contact a volunteer coordinator to learn how you can serve on our closing team in Hodmezovasarhely.
